The purpose of this open letter is twofold – firstly, to inform you of the egregious behavior of your employee Rafael and secondly, to express to you the unethical business practices I witnessed, which were nothing short from being considered a pyramid scheme and at the very least deceiving your “clients”.
First off: your employee Rafael. From the beginning of the “shadowing” process, Rafael began to display inappropriate and unprofessional behavior. He began our first conversation with making pejorative and vulgar comments about his female co-workers. After our brief and uncomfortable introduction, he informed me we were going to drive to North Hollywood to “see some clients”. His driving on our way to North Hollywood was erratic – driving at 45 mph on the fast lane, and then quickly swerving lane to lane for no apparent reason. This was a 57 mile trip on one freeway for the majority of the trip; there was no need for the many, dangerous lane changes. As he is driving, he feels the need to inform me that he did not possess the appropriate insurance to be shuttling prospective employees, and moreover, the car he was driving was not his!
All of this seemed unusual to me and I immediately wanted to terminate the shadowing process but, since we were already on the field, an hour away from your office and Rafael works on commission, I did not feel comfortable asking Rafael to return. I felt trapped.
The takeaway here: If a company is asking its prospective employees to do a shadowing with their current employees, it is common sense that the company chooses their best people for this task. If it is the case that Rafael, as described above, is this company’s best option – this company has seriously faltered. At the very least, a company should have rules, procedures, safety and courtesy protocol for their employees to follow when they are in charge of driving around prospective employees, company guests or anyone during paid time. Moreover, be considerate with how far you are taking people who are not employed by you yet. People are putting trust in your company to not leave them for hours on end with an unprofessional individual, stranded, 57 miles from their vehicle (this happened to me). This is completely unacceptable from any ethical, accredited company, which brings me to my second major point - the business you run appeared to be a scheme!
From what I understood from your company’s vague description, is that you peddle accounts for major corporations like AT&T. What is disturbing to me is how your company gains these accounts and that major corporations like AT&T endorse companies like you.
This was how I witnessed Rafael “pitch” his first sale of an AT&T account:
He informed the office manager that he was from AT&T and that this office’s account had recently been upgraded to a higher service (A LIE). He claimed he needed to check their modem to verify that it was the right one. The lady allowed him to check, where he returned to say that, it was in fact the wrong modem for their new service. He’d need to replace the modem, free of charge, of course, no worries. The lady signed off on the form after he informed her it was only to verify that he came to do as he said – she instead, ended up signing a contract for a year of AT&T’s U-Verse service.
Rafael had mentioned to me how if I joined the company, I’d work under him and then I’d need to help grow the team, with people working under me. I then asked him if he was aware of what pyramid schemes were because the team format he had just described was that of a pyramid scheme. He did not respond well to this comment.
After my stressful experience with Rafael and witnessing deceitful business practices, I had finally thrown in the towel. I needed to get out of this. I did not feel safe to clearly say, “What you are doing here is wrong, please take me back” so, instead I tried to say I had a family emergency I needed to attend to. However, even this statement made Rafael get very agitated. He had to “call his supervisor” (a call he took outside the car). He returned and began to argue with me, telling me that I was wasting his time.
I reiterated that I was sorry but it was important that I attend my sick mother. He became furious and said, “I cannot work with you”, pulled over and gestured for me to exit the vehicle. He pointed at a taxi and said, “You can take that home”. I was 57 miles from their offices where I had left my car.
At the end, I had a friend give me a lift back to their offices, 9 hours after the “interview” started. I did reach out to Rafael’s supervisor who said he was “flabbergasted” to hear my experiences and apologized. However, nothing was made clear as to if Rafael’s business practices and behavior were what he had learned from the company or if he was an anomaly. I believe it’s the former.
I will be posting this letter on public forums to warn people about “shadowing” with your company and the unethical business practices done by Cydcote and the corporations like AT&T that endorse them. I am urging my family and friends and whoever reads to boycott your company and the corporations whose products you sell due to your unethical and horrible business practices promoted within your company. I am disappointed in you and your company as a citizen and a consumer.
